Deeside is famous for its Royal connections, from Queen Victoria to Queen Elizabeth and her growing family. The Royal family have holidayed on Deeside since the mid 19th century, when Prince Albert had Balmoral Castle built as a retreat for himself and Queen Victoria. The Royal family who spend quite a bit of time every year at Balmoral and Birkhall. During Sept/Oct you may see members of the Royal family attending Crathie Kirk.

Many businesses along the valley bear Royal Warrants, signifying that they are suppliers to the Queen’s household. Ballater boasts Royal Deesides record from the Butchers to local garage!

Visitors today can follow the Victorian Heritage Trail, taking in the sights and attractions that have been attracting tourists for 150 years such as the Burn o’ Vat, the Queen’s View at Tarland and the Cambus o’ May Bridge. Glen Muick with its loch has the famous Glas-allt-Shiel on its bank, built by Victoria and mentioned frequently in her diaries.
