Braemar CastleBraemar CastleBraemar Castle

Discover 400 years of Highland history at Braemar Castle. Situated in the heart of the majestic Cairngorms National Park, the castle was built by the Earls of Mar in 1628 as a grand Highland hunting lodge, then converted to a British Army garrison after the Jacobite Uprising of 1745. Finally it was converted into a family home for the Farquharson family in the 1830s and became a crucial stop for Queen Victoria on her visits to Royal Deeside.

Visitors can hear all of the castle's stories and history by taking a tour with one of our local volunteers or by taking an audio guide. Twelve fully furnished rooms are open to the public. Visitors can also spend some time in our exhibition celebrating the year of Innovation, Architecture and Design. Cairngorms Gems tells the story of our local Cairngorm stone in Scottish Jewellery and design.
The castle runs an action-packed events programme, with something new every month.
